Simulation and experimentation at the centre of the opening seminar of the Seatec & Compotec Academy

13.03.2019

A high-profile panel for an in-depth analysis that will be held Wednesday, April 3 at 10:30 am in the framework of the exhibition that IMM-CarraraFiere dedicates to the sector of composite materials.

190310-P1“Simulation and Experimentation on Composite Materials” is the main topic that Enrico Cestino and Giacomo Frulla – Associate Professors and Members of the College of Mechanical, Aerospace, Automotive and Production Engineering of the Polytechnic of Turin, working for the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering – will tackle on the opening day of Compotec as part of the Seatec & Compotec Academy schedule. Seatec & Compotec Academy is the training programme that fair organisers IMM-CarraraFiere dedicate to the professional updating of the sector with a qualified organisation able to hold courses, seminars, thematic conferences, round tables focused on training in the field of composite materials. The initiative ideally continue the paths already institutionalised by Universities and will release  Professional Training Credits in co-operation with the professional Association of Engineers of the Province of Massa-Carrara.

The first topic that professors Enrico Cestino and Giacomo Frulla will deal with is the “Identification of equivalent materials for the realisation of representative models in the laboratory experimentation”, on which they have been working since a long time within the Department.

The second topic will be “The creation of molds for lamination in composite by 3D printing: application to the S55 model”, in collaboration with the S55 Team, a student group born from the desire of some students to give continuity to the work done for their graduation thesis. The product of this work has had great relevance and has given way to a series of fruitful initiatives, including the involvement of the Municipality of Orbetello for the redevelopment project of the lagoon from which the seaplanes Savoia Marchetti S55 stood out. The molds made by the 3D printing are more convenient, especially in the production of small or unique pieces. Thanks to this technology, producers can create prototypes at speeds and costs well below those obtained with traditional methods. 3D printing, therefore, makes it easy to evaluate the performance, suitability and quality of their potential products before starting mass production.

The seminar will continue with the analysis of the “Damages from slamming and fatigue on the Volvo Ocean Race 2017 – 2018fleet”, carried out by Stefano Beltrando of Q.I. Composites, the "doctor" of the America's Cup boats. Graduated in Science of Materials at the University of Turin, Beltrando founded in 1999 QI Composites, proposing to the boating market the non-destructive analysis with ultrasounds on manufactured articles in composite materials, becoming over the years the leader in the field of non-destructive testing on composites, providing his expertise in different fields, from automotive to wind power and aerospace. Employed by Volvo for the control at the end of every stage of all the carbon boats engaged in the exhausting tour of the world, Q.I. Composites has collected an extraordinary amount of data and case histories that will be presented at the Seatec & Compotec Academy.

The seminar will close with a detailed study on "Simplified CAE Simulation of Composite Structural Support for Naval Applications" held by Carlo Tonarelli, General Manager of Phiequipe.
