Sustainability is the plastics of the future

16.07.2018

Leading manufacturer of extrusion machinery and equipment for the plastic materials industry Luigi Bandera SpA shows the world that the use of sustainable raw materials is a viable solution.

180708-P5Bandera has designed and is manufacturing an industrial scale extrusion line that is dedicated to exploring and studying the productive capabilities of both, biological and recycled materials. This line will be available to packaging material manufacturers as of September 2018, the company says. According to Bandera, its R&D Centre has put in efforts well beyond laboratory studies for this project.

The demonstration of a flat die extrusion line dedicated to PLA processing was showcased at the Bio Plastics 2018 Workshop held early this week. The workshop was organised by the Research & Development Centre of Bandera in Busto Arsizio (VA) in co-operation with Nature Works, a producer of biopolymers derived from natural sources.

“We are dealing with a polymer that is produced by 100% renewable sources that enables numerous advantages, transparency and high rigidity, which allow producing lightweight packaging materials,” explains Mark Vergauwen, Commercial Director for Europe at Nature Works.

“Consequently, the challenge of the years to come for Bandera is promoting research to reduce the demand for materials that are not renewable and to operate in favour of a circular economy,” Andrea Rigliano, General Sales Director at Bandera, notes. Rigliano adds that this will improve consumers' quality of life as well as generate new profits for packaging material manufacturers.

Italy-based Bandera is proud to be among the promoters for the use of biodegradable and recyclable materials in packaging products. It has a leadership role in the sector of extrusion internationally, it adds.
