A new era in Kirchheim – premiere in Makino Europe’s largest Technology Centre

07.11.2016

Makino Europe’s vastly expanded Technology Centre in Kirchheim was the ideal venue for two events of industry-wide significance on 24-26 November, Makino’s International Aerospace Forum and Die & Mould Forum, as well as the European launch of two exciting new products: the Makino U86, a wire EDM designed for precise cutting of large parts, and the PRO6, Makino’s latest CNC for machining centres.

Premiere in Makino´s Largest Technology Centre in Europe

Striking expansion
In 2000, the operations at the Technology Centre in Kirchheim started with 12 employees focusing mainly on die & mould applications. By 2010, the activities had broadened out into aerospace and parts manufacturing. Today, 80 people are employed at the Technology Centre, Makino’s largest in Europe. To accommodate this growth and provide a fitting environment for showcasing Makino’s extensive machine portfolio, the showroom has been expanded from 800 m2 to 2,000 m2. Customers benefit from the wide range of activities steered from the Technology Centre in Kirchheim: consulting, sales, application engineering, demonstrations, time studies, machine tests, process optimisation, turnkey projects, project management and services in general. The striking expansion of the Kirchheim facility over the past 15 years reflects the importance of the aerospace, die & mould, automotive and general machining industries.

Forums of industry-wide significance
The official opening of the extended Technology Centre in Kirchheim on 24 November took place at the same time as two forums of industry-wide significance: Makino’s International Aerospace Forum and Die & Mould Forum, hosting more than 500 participants. Both events gave attendees a unique opportunity to experience live demonstrations of some of the most advanced technologies for aerospace and die & mould applications. And both featured presentations by well-known industry experts and Makino’s own specialists, testimonials from Makino customers, numerous live demonstrations and vast opportunities of networking.

This year’s International Aerospace Forum focused on best-in-class technologies for high-performance machining of titanium and aluminium structural parts as well as engine parts, future developments in the European aerospace supply industry, and the advantages Makino machines offer in manufacturing aerospace parts

The focus of the Die & Mould Forum was on the elimination of manual reworking, a key cost- and time-saving factor in the keenly competitive climate of Europe’s die & mould industry. Manual reworking can be eliminated through the high-precision machining Makino makes possible on milling machines as well as electrical discharge machines, which were all seen in action at the Die & Mould Forum. Another premiere showcased the ultra-precise machines UPN01, EDAF2FH and iQ300, which were installed in the new micromachining room in the Technology Centre. “This expansion constitutes a major break-through in demonstrating our capabilities and performance in the extreme aerospace and die & mould disciplines in Europe”, Dr. P. Anders Ingemarsson, President & CEO of Makino Europe explained. “It is very awarding to welcome so many customers from all over Europe and be able to show what our outstanding staff and technologies can offer.”

Celebrity highlight
Both events proved an ideal opportunity for valuable networking amongst companies at different stages of the value chain. A highlight of the accompanying programme was undoubtedly the dinner events where the special guests were none other than two well-known astronauts, Germany’s Dr Ulf Merbold and France’s Patrick Baudry

Product launches
A new CNC software for machining centres, the PRO-6, and Makino’s upgraded U86 wire EDM were also premiered at the events in Kirchheim.
• PRO6: This new CNC software was developed to meet customer demands for enhanced machining processes through improved safety, ease of operation, reliability and productivity. The concept behind this software development is that Makino machines are designed to work on their own – with minimal operator intervention. Hence, the main objectives were to reduce operator time and effort prior to production, and to reduce machine time and effort in production. PRO6 achieves these objectives by enhancing safety to minimise the risk of spindle damage and crashes; by streamlining and simplifying machine operation; by providing the operator with even more valuable assistance; by including many previously optional functions as standard software features; and by bettering machine performance, e.g. through improved surface quality.
• U86: This upgraded high-precision wire EDM has been designed for versatile and precise machining of large parts in non-stop working operations. Key Makino technologies such as H.E.A.T. (High Energy Applied Technology) and Hyper Cut guarantee many hours of unmanned production. Other outstanding features include little-to-no wire breaking, fast machining times and a wire consumption rate that is unmatched on the market. The extremely rigid machine structure is designed for high pitch accuracies and best possible straightness for part sizes of up to 800 x 600 x 500 mm.
